EXCERPT

Prologue: Desiree
“Do you, Desiree Spence, take Gabriel McCullough to be your lawfully-wedded husband?” the pastor asked. He looked between Gabriel and me as we stared into each other’s eyes. Gabriel’s touch was reassuring; his eyes alone seemed to undress me, as though it were just the two of us standing there.
That was the moment we’d been waiting for. After multiple obstacles and breakups, I realized I needed to put myself first and not let other factors define my happiness. Gabriel showed no signs of hesitation in marrying me, and I appreciated his strength and motivation.
Over the past year, I’d taken a new job at East High School after leaving my old job as a substitute teacher. I’d dealt with David’s betrayal and getting fired. My family stood by me—even though my father wanted to kick his ass. Hearing the gossip around town helped my decision to start over in a new town and make new memories. What I didn’t expect was to encounter an overwhelming force that turned my life upside down—this smooth, charismatic charmer with rich, milk-chocolate skin and dimples, with a small scar next to his mouth. Some people might have been put off by it, but in a weird way, it made him even sexier to me. Standing tall, at around 6’3”, he had broad shoulders and thick, muscular arms that brought me comfort every night in bed—not to mention Gabriel’s soft, oval, dark-browneyes that had me melting in the palms of his hands. I loved climbing onto him every chance I got. Feeling his hands running up and down my back brought chills to my spine.
We waited before having sex again until the wedding night. It was Gabriel’s idea, and after the shock wore off, I remembered he always put my needs above his own.
David could never compare to Gabriel; many times, David came off as selfish, making plans that revolved around his own needs. He liked to show off to our mutual friends and make himself seem bigger and more important than anyone else. I could count on my one hand how many times he got involved in the community.
After several nights of tossing and turning and yearning to have Gabriel by my side, I couldn’t wait to get him alone and try something new. The church we picked out was beautiful, with its fine crystal-and-gold window trimming. Flowers adorned each row, and thanks to the high ceiling, the church choir sounded exquisite as they performed one of my favorite songs, Tamia’s “Spend My Life with You”.
“Baby, you, all right?” Gabriel asked and squeezed my hands tighter to pull me out of my trance.
A part of me felt nervous; my stomach was doing somersaults and my hands were sweaty; I was about to become someone’s wife. I looked around the room at my family, and my best friend, Sidney, as she rocked her newborn baby and my goddaughter, Coco, to sleep. If I hadn’t listened to Sidney that day and interviewed for the job, I wouldn’t have met my future love, my backbone, best friend, and my weakness.
“Excuse me, Pastor, what did you say?” I asked as our guests laughed at me for zoning out during my wedding.
“I asked, do you take Gabriel to be your wedded husband, to have and to hold, through sickness and in health, till death do you part?”
“I do,” I answered, giving Gabriel a coy smile.
“I do,” Gabriel answered huskily.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife, and you may kiss the bride.”
I heard everyone shout and cheer before we even kissed.I caught a glimpse of Gabriel’s mother and sister, whispering back and forth; apparently, his mother was not the least bit interested in what was going on at her son's wedding. I was amused by her long, sleeveless black dress and black sunglasses. Of course, she dressed like it was a funeral, instead of our wedding day. I was not surprised she showed up—just surprised she didn’t stop the wedding.
I had a great relationship with his father, grandparents, and friends. His mom thought I was the devil, and she had tried her best to keep us apart—even conspiring with his ex-girlfriend to break us up, and then trying to convince him to play basketball again and quit teaching.
Gabriel lifted my veil and stared into my eyes as the tears slowly slipped down my cheeks. Standing on my tiptoes, I met him halfway, and our mouths sealed our vows. It was a sensual, pulsating kiss that had my juices flowing. I was ready to take him into the bathroom for a quickie.
“I love you, Mrs. McCullough,” he said.
“I love you too, Mr. McCullough.”
He gently wiped the tears traveling down my face.  “How does it feel to marry a man 10 years younger than you, babe?”
“Like I have a lifetime to share new memories—”
The church doors opened, and a familiar voice cut me off. “Desiree!”
“Da—David?” I stuttered, shocked at his interruption.

Audiobook Review: Spin by Lamar Giles

Spin by Lamar Giles

Narrated by Bahni Turpin, Shawana Carter and Sisi Aisha Johnson

10 hours 50 minutes

When rising star Paris Secord (aka DJ ParSec) is found dead on her turntables, it sends the local music scene reeling. No one is feeling that grief more than her shunned pre-fame best friend, Kya, and ParSec's chief groupie, Fuse - two sworn enemies who happened to be the ones who discovered her body.
The police have few leads, and when the trail quickly turns cold, the authorities don't seem to be pushing too hard to investigate further. Only no one counted on Paris's deeply loyal fans, ParSec Nation, or the outrage that would drive Fuse and Kya to work together. As ParSec Nation takes to social media and the streets in their crusade for justice, Fuse and Kya start digging into Paris's past, stumbling across a deadly secret. With new info comes new motives. New suspects. And a fandom that will stop at nothing in their obsessive quest for answers, not even murder....

I saw this book posted on Twitter and just from the synopsis, I was excited to read it. I was really into music as a teen and this is the book my young heart would have loved. The story is told from three point of views. Kya who is the longtime friend of Paris and is narrated by Sisi Aisha Johnson. Fuse is the new friend and social media manager for DJ ParSec and is narrated by Shawana Carter. Both POVS are set in the present while Paris who is narrated by Bahni Turpin is set in the past starting at the rise of DJ ParSec up until the time of her death. Kya and Fuse are not friends but are thrown together by circumstances and are forced to work together to find out what happened to Paris.

I really liked Kya and Fuse. They were both good friends to Paris but outside situations caused a rift. Working together to solve this crime and their shared grief built a friendship between the two despite past issues.

Giles weaved this tale of mystery in the death of a young black girl and how the world reacts to that. Add in the use of social media and how it can help artists rise, create a toxic fan base and be used to hurt others. That was one of the most realistic elements in the book for me and I kind of couldn't relate as an adult but I think younger readers would really identify with those aspects.

I gotta talk about the narration. I really love listening to black narrators and black stories. The characters are people who look like me and people I know and they sound like people I know. As always Bahni Turpin was amazing in her narration. Sisi Aisha Johnson was new to me and did and great job with the narration. Shawana Carter another new narrator to me was good but I had issues. I would love to listen to her again but she had a lot of awkward pauses in her narration that seemed like she was reading directly from the work and was a bit unfamiliar with stops and starts in the reading. If she worked on that she could become an amazing narrator because she has a great voice. I would still definitely recommend the audiobook in place of reading.

Overall I really loved this book. This was my first introduction to Lamar Giles and I plan on looking into his back list and look forward to reading new work by him. 5 stars

READ AN EXCERPT

It’s only been a few years since I buried the love of my life. I hear the word marriage and it pulls me from my thoughts of Frost, and I pay close attention.
“I think that’ll be enough time to plan, wouldn’t you agree?”
“To what?”
“Clarisse, were you not listening to me this whole time?”
I shake my head, not caring that I give myself away. Shit, this whole situation is new for me. It’s not every day a girl gets a blackmail or a proposal—I need time to process.
“I said, we’ll marry at the end of the month. That gives enough time to plan.”
“What?!”
“If I knew I could get away with it, I’d marry you with the hour. I think four weeks is reasonable, and I’m not pushing the date out longer,” he says with finality.
I don’t even protest, really. What would be the point? He continues, noting his mother will arrive next week—maybe sooner—to help with the planning.
“You’ve already told her?” My eyes, I know, are wide as saucers.
“Of course not, but I know Delta Price, and when I tell her we’re getting married, she’ll be on the first thing smoking.”
“Are you going to tell her I was with Frost?”
His handsome features soften, and my heartbeats start to quicken with worry of what she’ll think of me, jumping from one friend to the other. Even if they lost touch, Dylan and Frost shared a bond of friendship. He must know what I’m thinking. “She already knows of you and the twins. She was at the funeral.”
“Oh,” I whisper.
“We won’t have time right after the wedding for a honeymoon. I have some business to wrap up in New York, so we’ll go there instead, me, you, and the kids. I’ll take you on a proper honeymoon after I finish my business.”
“What if my business won’t allow me the time off to travel to New York or wherever else?” I press my lips and raise an eyebrow, challenging him.
He only smiles and continues laying out the details.
“Honeydew will be our primary residence. I’ve always loved the place and having a family to share in my joy is what I want.”
“I sure hope it stays that way, because I am building a business, let’s not forget.” I can’t hold my tongue on this matter, and have no problem reminding him at every turn. The only reason I’m allowing him to force my hand is to keep my business and my kids’ home. I’m giving up my freedom, but not my independence.
“I want to kiss the fire right off those soft lips.” He licks his and smiles at me.
I’m equal parts pissed and equal parts aroused. Pissed, because he’s smiling as if I’m an adorable child throwing a fit, and aroused because…well that’s what Dylan Price does to me. I stand, needing to get away from him, because if I don’t, I will turn into a child throwing a fit.
I don’t make it far before being spun around, and my mouth devoured by Dylan. He holds my face captive between strong hands. Dylan tastes amazing. His lips are fast becoming addictive. I soften into him against my will. I want to rage and fight, but how can I when he smells and tastes so delicious?
Soft pulls on my lips end an extremely heated exchange. “Your business will always be important. Don’t forget that.” He takes a few more pulls from my mouth. “Let me give you something else to never forget.”

I'M YOURS

Peggy Jordan had long ago closed the door on her heart’s desires, accepting she would never have a loving husband and family of her own. Then a friend asks her to care for an orphaned little girl, and she meets the child’s last living relative. With him, her patience is tested, her desires are unleashed, and she gets the first taste of a life she’d always felt was out of reach.

Years ago, Trevor Duncan left Savannah and vowed never to return. He traveled to remote corners of the globe, helping people, and helping himself to countless women in emotionally-empty relationships. A phone call in the middle of the night changes his entire life. He has a niece who needs him, and when he meets the woman caring for her, he’s consumed with having her all to himself.

Their desire is strong. Their love is instant. But can they learn to trust each other and survive the road to happily-ever-after?

READ AN EXCERPT

I’m passing the broom in my kitchen, attempting to clean up as much of the flour from my homemade pie crusts and pizza dough as I can. It’s another pizza and movie Saturday, and Trevor hasn’t come over with Adeline yet. I check the time again and it’s almost noon.
Clarisse’s nanny will be here around two with the twins for the play date. Adeline has been so excited for this day all week. Before they took off last night, she promised to go to sleep fast so morning could come quicker.
When Trevor wasn’t at my door bright and early with Adeline and a cup of Starbucks coffee, my first thought was to text him. Instead of, Are you still coming? I texted, Missing my morning cup of Joe. I have yet to receive a reply.
After putting away the broom and dust pan, I walk over to the work desk in the corner of my kitchen and grab my cell from the charger. I pull up Trevor’s number, ready to call, when a hard knock to the front door startles me. I power walk to the front entry and open the heavy wood door. Adeline rushes in and hugs my legs so tight, as if she didn’t just leave me last night. Her hair is all over her head, and she’s wearing rubber boots with her night clothes.
She looks a hot mess. I hold her face in my hands and lift it so I can see her expression. “Is everything okay?’
“No,” Trevor answers.
 “What happened?” I ask.
“Water pipe broke sometime in the middle of the night.” He’s holding a cup of Starbucks coffee. I’m guessing he saw my text. I smile and take the cup. “We woke to water everywhere this morning. I’m thankful it only reached the top of the baseboards. Hate to think what could have happened if it touched the wall plugs in that old house.”
My blood runs cold and I feel lightheaded at the thought. I recall when I first laid eyes on that old house, I questioned Trevor’s logic. Here he is with enough money to purchase three of my houses with no discomfort, and he settles on renting a small, old house.
“‘It’s my first home. We don’t need much, and it’s temporary,’” he had told me, and I realized Trevor was no typical rich asshole.
I hold Adeline tight and move from in front the door. I’m squeezing her, repeatedly kissing her cheek, grateful to see her face. When I think I’ve composed myself, I pull back and ask her to head upstairs so she can cleanup and dress before her play date. She runs up the stairs to her room, and I rush into Trevor’s waiting arms.
I’m holding him a little awkward because of my coffee cup, but Trevor has me completely engulfed in a strong embrace. “What are you going to do?”
He takes a breath before answering. “I reserved a room at a hotel in town.”
“Why?” I give him a confused look. “You know you can stay here. Adeline has gone through so many changes. Her room is familiar, and we have a routine.” I smile before adding, “The two of you are here over ninety percent of the day anyway.”
Trevor gives me a smile and I pray he agrees. I make one more attempt at getting my way, but this next statement is equally as true as the last. “I’m so happy you and Adeline are safe. To even give the smallest of my energy to the thoughts of what could have happened… I want to lock you both away so you’re safe forever. Right now I need you to say yes, Trevor.”

REVIEW

So finally we get Jennifer’s story. These three friends have been apart for years and their lives lead them on different paths. Jennifer didn’t achieve her dreams in Vegas and was happy to come back home to teach at the dance studio that taught her everything. Jen runs into trouble with the apartment she was supposed to rent and winds up meeting Blair.

I liked Jennifer. I liked that she wasn’t ashamed of where she came from and what she had to do to make ends meet. She only hid it because she didn’t want to be judged. I like Blair too. He was a little square but he was a really nice guy. I have always had trouble in novellas with new relationships in connecting with the romance between the two characters. I liked Jen and Blair together but they were just ok as a couple to me. I will admit they did have chemistry and steamed up those pages. Blair was a really good guy and Jennifer deserved every good thing in her life. I really liked how it ended with Jennifer using her skills in a new way.

I would recommend this book but read book one, two and three. I enjoyed this series and the MacLaine Girls and I’m kind of sad to see them go.

Release Blitz: TELL-TALE BY DANIELLE ALLEN

 TELL-TALE BY DANIELLE ALLEN

True, I’d been nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous—to have the conversation with him. I knew he was going to think I sounded crazy. I knew he was going to think I was crazy. But I’d nervously fretted about my feelings for him for years. My nerves had sharpened my senses—not destroyed or dulled them. And above all was my ability to listen.

I’d heard all the reasons why we shouldn’t be together. I know I’d given every excuse in the world, every excuse from heaven to hell as to why we couldn’t be together. But my feelings wouldn’t go away, so… how does that make me crazy?

Listen! Sanely and calmly, I’ll tell you the whole story.

** Tell-Tale is a contemporary romance inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart **

Jennifer walked through the front door, shutting and locking it behind her. She smiled when Horatio rose from his doggie bed and trotted across the living room toward her.
“Hey, big guy!” she gushed as she rubbed the boxer’s head and he licked her hand in greeting. “Did you have a good day?”
He panted and barked in reply.
“Yeah, I’ll hang out with you. Had a change of plans this evening but that’s OK. We’ll just watch some TV and eat nachos, huh?” she said to him. “Just let me get out of this leotard and tights.” She then strolled to the stairs.
Jennifer could hear the thumping base of R&B music playing on the floor above. It sounded like it was coming from Blair’s bedroom. She jogged up the stairs, tugged the strap of her dance bag over her head, and turned to walk down the hall toward her bedroom, but halted in her steps when she saw Blair stroll out the upstairs bathroom they shared, sending out a cloud of billowing steam into the hall in his wake.
Her mouth fell open in shock when she saw him.
Blair was butt naked, save for the towel he was using to wipe down his neck and face as he sprayed on deodorant and hummed absently along with the song that was playing on his stereo. As he walked, she got a delectable view of all that maple-colored physique in profile—from his toned arms to his tight ass to his muscular thighs. When Blair turned to walk toward his bedroom, she got a full frontal view. Though she should’ve looked away, she didn’t. Her eyes couldn’t help but travel the path of dark hair that led down his chest to his happy trail, ending at his manhood—and she almost choked.
“Oh . . . oh my,” she whispered.
Who knew computer nerds packed that much equipment?
Hearing her, Blair finally realized he wasn’t alone upstairs. He lowered the towel from his face. Their eyes met and for a few agonizing seconds they both stood in the hall, paralyzed, staring at one another like deer caught in oncoming headlights. Finally, he dropped the towel to his crotch.
“Shit! Shit, I’m so sorry,” he said.
“No! Don’t apologize! It’s my fault!” She held up her hands. “You didn’t know I was home. And I didn’t . . . I mean . . . I mean . . . I should’ve—”
“I’m gonna . . . uh . . . go put some clothes on now,” he said, lowering his eyes and stepping around her.
All that manly nakedness was only inches away from her now and she felt the overwhelming urge to reach out and touch it, but Jennifer nobly held back. Instead, she closed her eyes and went flat against the hallway wall as he jogged past her to his bedroom, slamming the door shut behind him.
Jennifer cracked one eye open, then another. She stood in the hall, dumbfounded, unable to erase the memory of what she’d just seen.
“Oh, my,” she whispered again, laughing a little, still in shock. “Whoa!”

Cover & Excerpt Reveal: Handle With Care by Helana Hunting

Today I have a cover and excerpt reveal from Helena Hunting's new book releasing August 27,2019 with St. Martins Press.

And now here is an excerpt of Helana Hunting's upcoming book.

NOTE: This is an unedited excerpt and is subject to change.

I’m startled out of my thoughts when my brother jumps up and shouts a bunch of profane nonsense, hands flailing like he’s trying to swim on land, or approximate the chicken dance while on an LSD trip.
“You can’t do this! It’s absolute bullshit!” Armstrong yells.
I look around the table, trying to piece together what I missed.
“I’m sorry, Armstrong. I know this is a shock, but we feel it’s in the company’s best interest to put Lincoln at the helm during this transitional stage,” G-mom says firmly.
At the helm? I look to G-mom who’s busy not looking at me.
Armstrong jabs at finger at himself. “But I’m the one who’s put in all the time here! I deserve to run the company! Lincoln doesn’t know the first thing about Moorehead. All he knows how to do is dig wells and forage for food in the wilderness. How are those valuable assets here?” He turns his attention to our mother. “Did you know about this? How can you let this happen? Look at him. How can that be the face of our company? He looks like he crawled out of a gutter and mugged a twenty-year-old college kid on a bender. How is this better for our bottom line?”
My mother clasps her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry, Armstrong, but this decision wasn’t mine to make. I know this is hard for you, but your grandmother and fath—”
Armstrong stomps his foot, exactly as a toddler would. “The company is mine! Lincoln can’t have it!”
I raise a hand, half to quiet my brother and also to find out what the freaking deal is. “Whoa, let’s back this bus up.  Can someone explain what’s going on?”
“You’ve been appointed as the CEO of Moorehead Media, according to the will,” Christophe—no R, because that would make it far too pedestrian a name—my father’s lawyer says.
I’m working on trying to remain calm as I address my grandmother. “You didn’t say anything about me being CEO. You said you needed my help.”
“Running the company, yes,” she says through a practiced, stiff smile.
It’s her warning face, but seriously, when she said she needed my help for a few months I figured it meant I’d be keeping Armstrong in line while she sorted out who was going to take over the company, which I realize now was a stupid assumption.
“I didn’t think that meant CEO. How am I going to run a company with this dickhead on staff?” I motion to my brother.
“The name calling is unnecessary,” G-mom replies.
“Lincoln’s not even part of this family! He hasn’t attended one event in the past five years except for Dad’s funeral. He didn’t bother coming to my wedding and now he’s going to run the company? How is that fair?”
I snort. “Your wedding was an expensive joke.”
He crosses his arms over his chest. “I was set up. Amalie had cold feet and made me out to look like the bad guy.”
The woman beside him shoots him disgusted look.
Armstrong clears his throat and tugs at his collar. “My wedding is not the real issue. The point is that you’ve never involved yourself in any part of this family and now you think you can come in and take over. I will not stand by and let this happen!” He keeps jabbing his finger at me, as if he’s engaged in a finger sword fight.
I lean back in my chair and lace my fingers behind my neck. Armstrong has always been reactive. And self-absorbed. For a while it seemed like he finally had it together—back when he was engaged. But ever since that fiasco of a wedding he seems to have come completely unglued. Again. But worse this time. “Someone needs a timeout.”
